Motor Vehicles

Many DMV transactions can be completed on line at or at a kiosk at many supermarkets.
Kiosk list can be found here:

Please note that while the state is prioritizing small counties for on-line transactions, it could be up to 11 weeks before you receive your tabs (due to covid in the prisons).

You can also renew by mail or by dropping your check/money order (no cash) in the ballot box in front of the Old Courthouse. This avoids long wait times for an appointment and AVOIDS LATE FEES.

If your appointment requires an in-person visit, we are open by appointment only. Please make an appointment HERE
Customers are limited to 2 transactions per appointment.
You will be able to see your time and date of your appointment as you schedule it. You will get a confirmation email as well as a reminder email before your appointment.
Please dress for the weather as MV Customers will be seen through the window from the porch.
Thank you and stay well!

The Gilpin County Clerk and Recorder’s office is responsible for vehicle registration, titling and issuing license plates.  You may pay for your license fees with personal checks, cash or credit cards. There is a notary on-site for your convenience.

Motor Vehicle Rules, effective March 1, 2016:

1.  To avoid any misunderstandings we will not quote fees or give estimates over the phone.

2.  Renewals can be done online at,  by mail or in person.

3.  If you did not receive your renewal card in the mail, you must come into the office in order to renew your vehicle.

4.  Customers needing to have multiple vehicles titled should call and make an appointment so we may service you better.

5.   Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No titles will be processed after 4 p.m.

We may not perform any motor vehicle transaction for anyone except the owner of the vehicle, unless the customer has the owner’s power of attorney. The only exception is a registration renewal if the customer has the owner’s renewal postcard. Businesses must give a letter of authorization to their agent in order for us to handle their transactions.

These policies are dictated by the Drivers Privacy and Protection Act (DPPA) which we are required to follow. They apply even if the customer is a spouse, family member or friend.
